CELT Beak Buffet

Linden, our CELT educator, came to our classroom today to teach about bird beak adaptations.  She brought six different interactive centers for the kids to experience why birds have certain beaks.  Ask your child to tell you all about it!

Persuasive Writing

We kicked off our Opinion writing unit today by bringing in our collections from home.  Each child had to choose their best object, then give at least two reasons for choosing that object, and then put it all in writing.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today we learned about Martin Luther King, Jr.  The kids were pretty angry about how African Americans used to be treated (and even continue to be treated).  We read some books, had some deep discussions, listened to his "I Have a Dream speech, and watched a quick Reading Rainbow video about this famous American hero.  To be continued on Tuesday!

Guidance with Mrs. G

Mrs. G came by for our bi-monthly guidance lesson.  Today's focus: solving small problems independently.  Mrs. G posed 4 different typical first-grade scenarios for the kids to practice solving with puppets.  The problems included:
1.  One puppet always wants to play with the same friend and that friend needs a break.
2.  One puppet always loves talks about basketball so much that they other puppet feels the friend is always bragging or putting him down.
3.  One puppet wants to play on the monkey bars but the other wants to play tag.
4.  One puppet wants to use the only ipad left, but so does the other puppet!

This past week we continued our study of nonfiction during reading and writing nonfiction.

Thaks to a generous grant from the PCPA, our first grade classrooms now have document cameras, nicknamed "ladybugs". These cameras shine huge documents on the wall for us to show everything from solving math problems to showcasing student work.  Thank you, PCPA!

We continue our study of Light & Motion in science.  Check out these pics of the kids exploring with shadows.
