Handwriting Without Tears

Our first graders continue their handwriting instruction and practice that began in kindergarten with the Handwriting Without Tears program.  Ms. Moe Cahill, Pond Cove's Occupational Therapist, joins us on Tuesdays and Thursdays for handwriting instruction.  Moe is pictured below drawing one of her famous "oopsies," or ways to make letters and numbers wrong.  Ask your child to sing you the song, Where Do You Start Your Letters?.  It is sung to the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It."

Writing partners

Today each child was assigned a writing partner.  We talked about how writers talk to other writers about their writing, storytelling their ideas out loud.

1.  First partner reads their story.
2.  Next partner pictures it and asks questions.
3.  First partner tells their story AGAIN, saying more!
4.  Partners switch!

Star assessment

Star is a math and literacy screening tool we use at Pond Cove School to let us know if we should dig deeper into children's learning progress. It is an iPad app that takes each child about 15 minutes to complete.

Quote of the Week!

The kids were asking about a photo I keep in the classroom of my boyfriend Troy and I and his two children.  I explained to the kids that Troy's two children were not MY children, kind of like my step-kids.  They did not come out of my belly.  So one of the kids asked, "If they didn't come out of your belly, did they come out of Troy's?"

I want to let you all know that your kids are fabulously magical and we are having a wonderful time getting to know each other and spend time together.  I look forward to spending my days with them. Other teachers, such as Allied Arts teachers and lunchroom aides have commented to me how lovely this class of kids really are.  Give yourselves a pat on the back; your kids are awesome.  Happy HUMP day.

Reading Partners

Reading Partners Work Together

1. We work as a team.  We take turns.  We sit side-by-side.  We put the book in the middle.
2.  We build good habits together, like taking a "sneak peek" of our books before reading.
