Tech time

Mr. Charltray, Mr. Awesome tech dude, came to our class to teach us a new app today.  It is called SIGHT WORDS, and it teaches sight words (hee hee).

Our job as educators is to wisely choose apps.  We look for several things in a good app.
1. Is it educational?
2. Is it free, or WORTH the $?
3. Does it adapt to the individual learner or is it able to differentiate?
4. Does it allow you to do multiple things within the app?  For example, one of our best apps is called 30hands, and it allows you to do multimedia learning with science, or math, or reading, etc.

Next Tuesday night (March 31) is tech night at school for kindergarten and first grade.  It starts at 5:45 and runs until 6:30pm.  It's your chance to experience the amazing Mr. Charltray!  You will receive an email soon with a link to sign up and lots more info about that evening.

International Happiness Day

Today is International Happiness Day!
At the "Happy Table," Pond Cove students each wrote down something that makes them happy, then made a collage of happy on the wall.

Beach day!

I just overheard one of the kids say, "Water bottles, beach music....nothin' better." So cute!
The kids have created their own beach in the classroom!

Beach Day this Friday!

This Friday, March 20th will be Beach Day at Pond Cove.  Kids from my class can wear shorts, sunglasses, flip flops, sun hats.  They can also bring a towel for the classroom, and may want to bring a bucket and shovel to play outside in the snow.  Please make sure to label the bucket with your last name.  Kids will still need snowpants to play in the snow and wear over their shorts.

Beach Blanket Bingo is on Friday night, the 20th, from 5:30-7:00pm.  This is sponsored by the PCPA.

Classroom Cleanliness

We could really use some Clorox wipes if you are at the store this week!  Generic brand works just fine!  Thanks so much!

We continue our study of motion with SPINNING.  Today's work with twirler wings was a blast.  We figured out that gravity pulls them down, and the higher you are, the better.  So, we found the highest place at Pond Cove school!
Can you see the twirler?

We have finished our study of Winter Animal Adaptations and have moved on to our study of MOTION.    Today's lesson....SPINNING!

Making videos with Mr. Awesome Charltray

We are working with our Technology Integrator to videotape our book reviews!  If you remember Reading Rainbow, each video ends with kids doing book reviews. First, though, a lesson in photography and being a movie star.

Kids Teaching Kids

What better way to teach?
Sometimes right before a class lesson, kids will demonstrate the use of a skill early.  This may be a few months before the lesson or just the day before.  I ask these kids to then co-teach with me to show their peers what they have learned or what they already know.  So cute!

Sneakin' a book

A first grade teacher's favorite thing. Seeing students unable to get out of the reading zone, even at 3pm bus time.

Dr. Seuss special addition

Check out the crazy hat!

If it looks familiar, it comes from The Cat in the Hat!
